A LIST OF THE SEPARATE PURPOSES OF TONGUESIn summary then, we have 4 distinct and separate purposes of tongues speaking- A) Worship- "IF I pray in an unknown tongue MY SPRIT PRAYETH" "and they that worship him MUST worship him in SPIRIT AND in truth" John 4:24 & 1 Corinthians 14. B) Sign of Receiving the Holy Ghost- "Stammering lips and another tongue... THIS IS THE REST " -Isaiah 28:11-12. "Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, AND THOU HEAREST THE SOUND... SO IS EVERY ONE THAT IS BORN OF THE SPIRIT" -John 3:7-8. "THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY GHOST... THIS, WHICH YE NOW SEE AND HEAR" -Acts 2:33. "...On the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. FOR THEY HEARD THEM speak with tongues" -Acts 10:45-46. C) Sign to unbelievers- "Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not" -1 Corinthians 14:22. D) One of the gifts of the Spirit for the edification of the church- "Diversities of gifts... TO PROFIT WITHAL... Desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. For greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues EXCEPT HE INTERPRET, THAT THE CHURCH MAY RECEIVE EDIFYING... " -1 Corinthians 12:4, 7, 30-31. It is specifically, and only, to this final purpose of tongues (D), that 1 Cor. 12:30 is specifically addressing, for it is specifically addressing, and lists, not individual edification, but those gifts and callings that profit withal- "Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? HAVE ALL THE GIFTS of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
