SCRIPTURES ON TONGUES

The question put to me was- "Do you have to speak in tongues to be saved?"

The very simple answer is- According to Jesus, you must be born-again of the Holy Ghost in order to enter the kingdom of heaven, and a sound will be made, which will be speaking in tongues.

But, first off, you need to separate in your mind the difference between the event of receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost (being born-again), from what it means to be "saved." They who will be "saved" are those who believe, which also means to endure unto the end...

Heb 10:38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. 39 But we are NOT OF THEM WHO DRAW BACK unto perdition; BUT OF THEM THAT BELIEVE *TO* THE SAVING OF THE SOUL.

Mat 10:22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but HE THAT ENDURETH TO THE END SHALL BE SAVED.

Therefore, "Salvation" actually begins upon repentance, and continues through baptism in water in Jesus name for the remission of sins, and baptism in the Spirit...

Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

This Acts 2:38 is how we obey THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST, it is how we apply the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ to ourselves, and thereby set ourselves apart from the world of sin THROUGH HIM...

1Co 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

If we don't OBEY that gospel, as outlined in Acts 2:38 by Peter, we shall never be saved, but we will lose our souls eternally...

2Th 1:8 "..them that know not God, **AND** THAT OBEY NOT THE GOSPEL of our Lord Jesus Christ: 9 Who SHALL BE PUNISHED WITH EVERLASTING DESTRUCTION from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

...and from there (obeying the gospel) salvation continues through living holy before God...

1Co 9:27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

Heb 12:14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: 15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

...And salvation continues through to the end of our lifetime on earth, as God has foreordained for each of our individual lives...

Rev 12:10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. 11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

Though we all come to Him individually, He brings us all to Him through the same faith, the same way...

Eph 4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 ONE LORD, ONE FAITH, ONE BAPTISM,

All these steps we take one step at a time, obeying through faith, as the scripture says to do.

Heb 11:8 BY FAITH Abraham, when he was called to go... OBEYED

But, per your request, I'm not going to go into "salvation" here, I'm going to go into "tongues."

---

There are several different purposes of tongues. The one you are asking about here isn't the "gift of tongues" which all don't have. But tongues were also found in the Bible as a "sign" of receiving the Holy Ghost (synonymous to being born-again).

Isaiah prophesied that tongues would be the sign of the "rest" that Christ would give...

Isa 28:11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. 12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

Jesus said that ALL, EVERY ONE, would give a sound as evidence of their new, spiritual birth...

Joh 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and THOU HEAREST THE SOUND THEREOF, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: SO IS EVERY ONE THAT IS BORN OF THE SPIRIT.

Those are Jesus' words. ALL who deny that tongues are what He meant, are left with absolutely NO scriptural counterpart to explain these words.

The apostles confirmed that a sound was made, when they received the promise of the Holy Ghost, on the day of Pentecost...

Act 2:33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY GHOST, he hath shed forth THIS, which ye now see and HEAR.

When the Gentiles received the Holy Ghost, the apostles knew that they had SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE they HEARD them speak in tongues...

Act 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, THE HOLY GHOST FELL on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out THE GIFT OF THE HOLY GHOST. 46 FOR THEY ***HEARD*** THEM SPEAK WITH TONGUES, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, 47... that these... have received the Holy Ghost AS WELL AS WE?

It is notable about the incident in Acts 10:44, that it was called, and identified, with several things:

THE HOLY GHOST FELL

THE GIFT OF THE HOLY GHOST

THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY GHOST...

Act 11:15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. 16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be BAPTIZED WITH THE HOLY GHOST. 17 Forasmuch then as God gave them THE LIKE GIFT AS HE DID UNTO US, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?

When Peter said- THE LIKE GIFT AS HE DID UNTO US, he cross-referenced BACK to the day of Pentecost. Of which, Acts 2:33 had said...

Act 2:33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY GHOST, he hath shed forth THIS, which ye now see and HEAR.

So now we have, in Acts 10:44, also these titles on that incident, tying them all together...

THE LIKE GIFT AS HE DID UNTO US

THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY GHOST

Therefore it can be expected, as Peter said in Acts 2:38-

Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

That ALL who receive the promise, the gift of the Holy Ghost, the baptism in the Holy Spirit, which JESUS called being born-again of the Spirit, they are all ONE AND THE SAME THING, and that the same things as happened on the day of Pentecost will be repeated...

Act 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Now, if any one wants to refute these things, they need to take it up with Jesus, who said, very plainly and very specifically...

Joh 3:5 "...Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, YE MUST BE BORN AGAIN. 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and THOU HEAREST THE SOUND THEREOF, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: SO IS EVERY ONE THAT IS BORN OF THE SPIRIT.

Paul explains why this is so important...

Rom 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, **IF** so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now IF ANY MAN HAVE NOT THE SPIRIT OF CHRIST, HE IS NONE OF HIS. 10 And **IF** Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

These are Scriptures. These are the words of God. Beware of the traditions of men. The traditions of men will try to keep you from receiving the Holy Ghost!

Act 7:51 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.

It isn't we who hold these doctrines of receiving the Holy Ghost as evidenced by speaking in tongues as the Spirit gives the utterance that are "divisive." It is they who refuse to receive the Holy Ghost...

Jud 1:19 These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit.

The Holy Ghost IS the kingdom of God...

Rom 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

And Jesus says the religious hypocrites don't enter in the kingdom of God (which means they don't receive the Holy Ghost, nor allow other people to)...

Mat 23:13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

That is the short version.
