Acts 2:38

Be Baptized Every One of You in the Name of Jesus Christ

For the remission of sins!

According to the scriptures, why are we baptized?

1. Remission of Sins-

"It behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead... And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name among all nations" -Luke 24:47. ("Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins... -Acts 2:38).

"And now why tarriest thou? Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord." -Acts 22:16.

2. To Put on Christ-

"For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ" -Galatians 3:26-27

2 Cor 11:2 …For for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

3. Salvation-

"He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved. But he that believeth not shall be damned" -Mark 16:16. ("Be it known unto you all...the name of Jesus Christ... This is the stone...which is become the head... Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." -Acts 4:10-12.

"God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein... souls were saved by water. The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God.) - 1 Peter 3:20-21. ("By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house..." -Hebrews 11:7).

4. To be BURIED with Jesus-

"In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him…" - Col 2:11-12

"Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:" Rom 6:3-4

There is not one biblically stated purpose for being baptized into the "Father, Son, and Holy Ghost"!!! Not one!

Therefore- to do so accomplishes absolutely nothing according to the word of God! To be baptised into the "Father, Son, and Holy Ghost" is absolutely useless! for nothing! vanity!

WHO baptized into the name of Jesus?

a. Peter: "Jesus...said unto...Peter...I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven..." -Matthew 16:17-19.

"Peter said...be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ..." -Acts 2:38.

b. Philip the evangelist: "...Philip...preached Christ unto them. And... they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus" -Acts 8:5,12,16.

c. Paul: "...Said Paul, John verily baptized...saying unto the people, that they should believe on Him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus" -Acts 19:4-5.

d. All the apostles together: "...Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James...and Simon...and Judas... These all continued with one accord... Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said... Be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ..." -Acts l:13-14, 2:14,38.

e. Even John the Baptist baptised saying to believe on the one coming after him- "Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on Him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus" -Acts 19:2-5.

Mat 3:14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

And even though John the Baptist taught baptism into one, "that is on Jesus", Jesus came to him to be baptized-

"John did baptize... and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins... saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me..." -Mark 1:4,7.

The signs from the heaven didn’t come until after Jesus was baptized-

Luke 3:21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized (past tense), and praying, the heaven was opened, 22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

It does not say anywhere that John or Jesus mentioned the words "Father, Son, and Holy Ghost" That is the utter assumption from the lips of a man- not scripture. But Paul specifically says John did baptise pointing to the one who came after- that is on Jesus!

"John verily baptized… saying unto the people that they should believe on Him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus" -Acts 19:2-5.

If they who were already baptized by the same man who baptized Jesus, if they were told to be rebaptized into Jesus- why won’t you do the same???????????

Disobedience! Baptism into Jesus has become to you…

1 Pet 2:8 …a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

f. JESUS HIMSELF COMMANDED Paul to be baptised INTO the name of Jesus-

Act 9:1 And Saul... 3 ...came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: 4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? 5 And he said, who art thou, Lord? and the lord said, I am Jesus...

To whom Paul (then Saul) replied...

Act 9:6...Lord, what wilt *thou* have me to do? And *the lord said* unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou **must** do.

And what was it that was told to Paul that he must do, according to Jesus' *command*?

Act 22:12 ...Ananias... 13 ...said unto me, Brother Saul... 16 ...why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on *the* name of the Lord.

And what was this name of the Lord?

Act 9: 5 And he said, who art thou, lord? and the lord said, I am Jesus...

Does anyone doubt, or want to contradict the fact, that Paul was commanded by Jesus himself to be, and therefore was, baptized specifically into the name of Jesus Christ? Let he that has ears, hear the words of testimony from the apostle Paul himself of what name he was baptized into-

Rom 6:3 ...**us** as *were baptized *into* Jesus Christ*!!!

---

There was absolutely no one in the Bible that was ever baptized calling on the words "Father, Son, and Holy Ghost"

Therefore, it is simply not scriptural to do so!

Since Jesus, John, and every Apostle baptized, and/or commanded baptism, into the name of Jesus Christ, any other interpretation of the scriptures comes from people who feel they understand better what Jesus meant than even Jesus and the apostles themselves!!!

This is the weight of scripture.

2 Cor 4:3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord;

How Do You Get From These (Or Other) Passages That Anything Must Be Said At All?

First let's set some foundation scriptures.

We have one set of verses where the baptizer did the talking…

Acts 19:4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized … saying …believe on …on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Mark 1:7 And preached, saying, There cometh ONE mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.

How could John baptize SAYING to believe on "there cometh one mightier than I" if he never said anything?

1 Cor 1:13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; 15 Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.

How could Paul justify this reasoning if no name were being said? He couldn't. Because if no name were being said, no one would know what name anyone was being baptized into! Paul was adamant that they were baptized INTO Jesus, and used just such a foundation for his reasoning of their reliance on JESUS CHRIST (and not on any Trinity).

In a second set, it appears that the baptizee did the speaking…

Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

How does one "call upon the name of the Lord" without saying that name?

Acts 8:35 …Philip …preached …Jesus. 36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, i believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

How does one confess belief in Jesus without saying the name of Jesus?

Let's be reasonable, and not faithless, and disobedient- without someone SAYING the name of Jesus, all these passages would be meaningless.

---

There is no mention in the Bible of a set "baptismal formula." And, since we have examples of both baptizee and the baptizer speaking the name of Jesus, there doesn't seem to be any difference in who spoke the "name."

The important thing is that THE (singular) name was what was being preached AND believed, AND confessed- the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Acts 10:43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in Him (not them!) shall receive remission of sins.

Rom 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

Now, if we are to be saved by "calling on the name" "Confessing with thy mouth" the name of the Lord, and the scripture specifically says-

1 Pet 3:21 …baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

Col 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus,

And baptism is both word and deed, and…

Acts 4:12 neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name (than Jesus Act 4:10) under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

And since…

1 John 3:23 …This is His commandment, that we should believe on the name of his son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

Therefore- only in actually saying the name, or having the name of Jesus Christ being said at baptism could one possibly actually fulfil ALL these scriptures.

Furthermore, since Jesus said…

John 5:43 I am come in my Father's name,

John 17:6 I have manifested thy name

John 17:26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it:

And that having said all that, the apostles said-

Acts 2:38 …Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins,

And saying such, the Apostles…

Mark 16:20 …went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

Then, and therefore, to say anything else, such as "Father, Son, and Holy Ghost" is to deny ALL of these scriptures.

Please continue with part two - In The Name - Is Jesus' name at least as valid as saying "Father, Son, and Holy Ghost?
